How much does a walk in shower cost installed?
The price comes down to what goes on the walls and how much hardware you add. A prefab acrylic surround with standard plumbing is the entry point. Tile walls add material and labor. Stone tile with frameless glass is the top end.
These numbers cover the shower portion of a 60 square foot bathroom remodel. They do not include the vanity, toilet, or general room flooring.
| Finish level | Installed cost | Walls | Door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $5,900 | Acrylic panels | Curtain rod |
| Modern | $8,100 | Porcelain tile | Curtain rod |
| Luxury | $13,500 | Stone tile | Frameless glass |
Prefab acrylic vs tile: where the money goes
The wall material is the largest single line item in a walk in shower. An acrylic surround runs $1,350 in our data. Porcelain tile runs $1,845. Stone tile runs $3,105. Switching from acrylic to porcelain adds $495 to the project. Going from porcelain to stone adds another $1,260.
The cost gap is not just the panels themselves. Tile requires a waterproof membrane applied to the backer board before any tile goes up. The Tile Council of North America states that the membrane must cover the solid backing under the entire area to be tiled 1. Acrylic panels are waterproof on their own and skip this step entirely. Tile also needs a skilled setter who can maintain even joints and a proper quarter inch per foot slope on the shower floor.
Acrylic panels come in standard sizes and limited colors. They go up quickly and clean easily. Tile opens up the full range of colors, patterns, and custom layouts, but it needs periodic grout sealing to stay watertight over time.
| Factor | Prefab acrylic | Porcelain tile | Stone tile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surround cost | $1,350 | $1,845 | $3,105 |
| Shower floor tile | $720 | $945 | $1,620 |
| Waterproofing | Built in | Membrane needed | Membrane needed |
| Built in niche | Not standard | $297 | $477 |

What pushes the price higher?
Several upgrades can move a walk in shower from the basic range toward luxury. These are the most common.
Nearly half (49%) of all bathroom renovations enlarge the shower according to the 2026 Houzz Bathroom Trends Study 2. A larger shower directly increases the surround, floor tile, and waterproofing costs. If your project includes expanding the shower footprint, plan for every tile and membrane line item to scale up.
- Frameless glass door: $1,755 in our luxury tier. This single item is the biggest jump between modern and luxury. If a glass enclosure is not in the budget, a curtain rod keeps the project at $8,100 or below.
- Stone over porcelain: The surround jumps from $1,845 to $3,105 when you switch to natural stone. The shower floor follows, going from $945 to $1,620.
- Drain relocation: Our data shows the drain modification at $266 for basic and $399 for luxury. If the new shower does not line up with the existing drain, the plumber reroutes the waste pipe. On a concrete slab, that means cutting into the floor and patching afterward.
- Built in niche: $297 at the modern level, $477 at luxury for a larger or double niche.
- Larger shower footprint: All of our pricing is based on a 60 square foot bathroom. A bigger shower means more tile, more membrane, and more labor across multiple line items.
Worked example: basic prefab walk in shower
You have a 60 square foot bathroom and want a clean, simple walk in shower. You pick an acrylic surround, keep the drain where it is, and use a curtain rod instead of glass. Here is every line item.
Acrylic surround: $1,350. Demolition: $1,093. Plumbing: $713. Shower floor tile: $720. Permits: $450. Drywall repair: $405. Shower valve and faucet: $361. Drain modification: $266. Caulking and sealant: $189. Cleanup: $180. Showerhead: $176.
Total: $5,900. This covers the shower only. If you also need a new vanity, toilet, and room flooring, a full 60 square foot basic bathroom remodel runs $13,224 in our data.
These are preliminary numbers from national averages. A real quote comes after a contractor sees the space and checks what is behind the walls.
Common questions.
For many bathrooms, yes. Acrylic panels are waterproof, easy to clean, and cost $1,350 compared to $1,845 for porcelain tile. The tradeoff is limited design choices. If matching a specific tile pattern or adding a built in niche matters to you, tile is the better option. If you want a clean shower at the lowest installed price, acrylic does the job.
